The perfect pocket notebook sleeve for everyday carry
I have a problem with the acquisition of leather field notes covers, much like the notebooks themselves! I carry a field notes notebook in my pocket at all times and haven’t yet found the perfect pouch to carry them and protect them. Before Christmas, Maker’s South had a promotion on in-stock hand-made leather wallets for field notes. I quickly scanned through the website on my phone and placed an order for one of the many different leather and stitching combinations that they had online from my phone. Super easy.
Shipping was fast, as expected from Maker’s South - even to the great white North. Even though this was only a simple, flat, leather wallet, Maker’s South shipped an incredibly well-packaged box, which included a couple of stickers of their logo (which are perfect for my MacBook).
I did have a surprise though when I opened the package - the leather had some weird numbers stamped into the front of it, and the top of the wallet open to the left and I recalled looking at ones that were cut the other way.
Despite the leather being the perfect colour, I initially had a tough time with the numbers and even went as far as reaching out to Chrispian at Maker’s South. He tactfully confirmed that this was the in-stock item that I ordered and sent me the link to the now hidden page. The letters are called a branded serial number (I am thinking cool cow tattoo), and indeed the cut of the wallet is designed for left-handed people. Maker’s South does make right-handed versions as well.
Great customer service
Despite my error in ordering the wrong cut, Chrispian of Maker’s South offered to make my purchase right in whatever way he could - I could send back for a refund or replacement product in whatever leather combination I wanted. Really fantastic customer service for my error. With the costs of shipping from/to Canada, I decided to keep the sleeve. I figured that lots of people I know use Field Notes regularly and I could gift it away at the next pen meeting as the sleeve was not particularly expensive (especially for the quality of the leather and craftsmanship.
The Leather Sleeve
I decided that I would try the sleeve anyway, as I love the distressed leather colour. The leather was soft but still had a durable heft to it as well. Maker’s South’s stitching and craftsmanship are, as always, excellent.
The leather colour is called Brown Dublin, and it is finished with Colonial Tan thread. The leather is weighed at 5-6 oz, which seems like the perfect balance of durability and lightweight carry. The outside dimensions are 4” wide by 6” tall, and it fits a Field Notes (or similar sized pocket notebook) snuggly. The first couple of times I put a notebook in, the fitment was very tight, but the leather has broken in and stretched slightly wonderfully. In fact, I enjoyed watching the leather stretch nicely to contour to the book as I slid a Field Notes into the tight-fitting wallet.
This sleeve looks just right for daily carry, despite the branded serial number. The asymmetrical numbers have grown on me as it gives the sleeve character. The back of the sleeve also shows a nicely embossed Maker’s South stamp.
Falling in love with the sleeve
After using the sleeve a couple of times, I really fell in love with it. The design of the wallet is exactly what I was looking for, and the leather that Maker’s South used is perfect for this type of EDC pocket carry. As I have been using it, the scratches and blemishes from being carried in my back pocket are adding to the finish rather than detracting from it. I think this leather will wear really well and will get more beautiful with use.
Over time the serial numbers have come to bother me less, and I really don’t notice the left-handed open - possibly as I often have a pen in my right hand when I open it. I am no longer considering gifting it.
This is an excellent value EDC sleeve, and I would heartily recommend Maker’s South to anyone, as their customer service, product quality and shipping are all first class. I have bought from them before and again have been pleased with their products. One of the best leather products I own (and the best Field Notes cover).
